L-Arginine PATENT LICENSED
TO SYNERGY WORLDWIDE
The scientific and medical community took notice when it was recently announced that the world's leading expert on L-arginine had licensed her patented product to Synergy Worldwide, a Nutraceutical company in Provo, Utah. The L-arginine patent is the brainchild of world-renowned researcher, Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Biomedical Research at the Glycemic Research Institute in Washington, D. C.
After 20 years of research on L-arginine, it was assumed that Dr. Allen would license her patent to a large Pharmaceutical company. Corporate and Pharmaceutical negotiations for the rights to the patent came to an abrupt halt when the decision was announced that Synergy Worldwide had been granted the rights to the L-arginine patent.
Dr. Allen's L-arginine patent is considered the breakthrough product of the Century, and is currently valued at 100 million dollars. The value of the patent was based on the unique properties of Dr. Allen's formula.
Since the Nobel Prize was awarded for Nitric Oxide/L-arginine, the Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical industries have rushed to bring L-arginine products to market. According to scientists, the problem is that no-one appears to know enough about L-arginine to produce a product that is both efficacious and safe for human use. Though L-arginine has been shown, in over 10,000 clinical studies, to provide health benefits to humans, the process for eliminating side effects has eluded formulators. Additionally, the major benefit of L-arginine appears to be the reactivation of anti-aging mechanisms, but the action required is complex, and takes precise formulating.
Dr. Allen states, "You cannot simply place L-arginine in a capsule or spray, or in a formula that does not contain the proper co-factors, and expect it to work. That won't happen. L-arginine is both dose-dependent and timing-dependent, and it is very selective about crossing the blood-brain-barrier, where it releases anti-aging-hormones."
Researchers agree that L-arginine formulas containing Lysine, sucrose, maltodextrins, and any other competing agent, does not work L-arginine also reactivates the herpes simplex virus (HSV), and produces nitric oxide (NO), which can cause severe free radical damage. The methodology utilized in producing an L-arginine product that does not carry these side effects was developed by Dr. Allen.
When reporters asked Dr. Allen and Synergy Worldwide to reveal these processes to the medical and scientific community, they declined, stating that the process is "proprietary, and not described in the patent." One of the processing secrets that has been disclosed by chemists working on the project, is the extraction of organic Kiwi glycosides and low glycemic carbohydrates that are then bound to L-arginine molecules.
Synergy Worldwide announced that the name of the L-arginine product will be PROARGI-9, to be launched mid-February 2004.

This is Part I of a two-part article about the use of magnets for Wellness. This part reviews some history and back-ground of magnetic usage, and discusses evidence of the effects on people. In Part II, in the next issue, we look at studies, to see if magnets have validity from a scientific medical basis, and anecdotal testimonials to see what ordinary people are relating relative to their experiences using magnets for various discomforts. We then consider whether magnets for health are a "myth" or "miracle".
Since the beginning of recorded history, magnets have been reported to possess mystical qualities, often associated with witchcraft and primitive medicine. Since magnetic fields cannot be seen directly, it is not surprising that the effects of magnetism was regarded as a mysterious force.
Magnets have been used for "health" matters for hundred of years. The oldest known use of magnetic powers can be traced to Africa where a magnetite mine, dating back approximately 100,000 years, was found. Magnetite is believed to have been ground, and put into foods, potions, and topical applications. Ancient civilizations of Greeks, Hebrews, Arabs, Indians, Egyptians and Chinese have a history of using magnets for health. Cleopatra supposedly wore a magnetic headband for health. Aristotal is said to have lain on lode-stones for their healing effect. Lourdes, France, where many miraculous healings "occur", has one of the highest magnetic levels on the surface of the Earth.
While the ancients probably did not realize their intimate relationship with magnetics, we know that we live on the gigantic magnet Earth, and every creature on earth is exposed to it's natural magnetic energy. The hypathalmus gland, a part of the brain, is magnetic. In whales and birds, it's believed to be the mechanism whereby creatures navigate over great distances, with uncanny precision. This gland exists in humans, with no known use for it's magnetic properties.
Humans appear to need sources of magnetic energy for survival. By scientific measurements, the earth's magnetic field has been decreasing for thousands of years, significantly so during the past 200 years. Currently it is about one-half the strength it was when humans were an agrarian society, living and working close to earth.
Research and writings of Robert O. Becker, M. D., orthopedic surgeon and author of scientific books, indicate that, while low levels of magnetic fields can be beneficial and aid in healing, high-powered electromagnetic fields created by household current, and high voltage power lines, may be detrimental to health.
Stress in our civilized society, with concrete foundations, metal automobiles and steel buildings, is believed to reduce the magnetic energy reaching the body. Referred to as “magnetic field deficiency syndrome” certain researchers believe that it that can cause headaches, dizziness, muscle stiffness, chest pain, insomnia, constipation and general fatigue, often resulting in development of acute symptoms or chronic degenerative disorders. Adding a magnetic field from outside the body may provide anti-stress energy sufficient to aid the bodys’ healing process.
The U. S. health care industry is estimated to be near two trillion dollars with a small fraction of those dollars spent on preventive or alternative modalities. Society is turning to complementary or alternative solutions in order to avoid drugs and surgery, which studies indicate may be a bigger "killer" than the diseases. People everywhere are begin-ning to "rediscover" using magnets for health. However, there are many medical professionals who openly state that using magnets is akin to using "snake oil". Who is right? In the next part we'll look at the research and the testimonials.
